St Francis Hobart Flexible Learning Centre

History and Philosophy

St Francis Flexible Learning Centre opened in 2016 and is a registered secondary school located in West Moonah, Tasmania. St Francis FLC is an alternative education setting offering curriculum for students in years 7 – 10. The purpose of the organisation is to empower young people to liberate themselves from their circumstances through positive educational experiences that build skills, knowledge, meaningful relationships and self-efficacy. St Francis FLC operates by four Principles: honesty, safe and legal, participation and respect. These Principles are the foundation of the organisation’s operation with young people, families and communities. We ask that young people live by these Principles at school and we constantly strive to negotiate within them. St Francis FLC supports young people through teacher/youth worker partnerships in each classroom that ensure the holistic support of each young person. Young people all have a personal learning plan that articulates their goals and strengths to ensure learning is tailored to their individual needs and interests.

Services

St Francis Flexible Learning Centre offers the following educational opportunities for young people: •    Daily on site school program for young people •    After hours school program for young people •    Outreach school program for young people. Furthermore, St Francis Flexible Learning Centre offers food daily for each young person, weekly class excursions, weekly Adventure Recreation elective, art opportunities, Parkour elective and more.

Learning

St Francis Flexible Learning Centre offers the Australian Curriculum for years 7 – 10 through personal learning plans that articulate individual goals and strengths of young people. Each young person has an Australian Curriculum grid that tracks their educational progress throughout their time at St Francis Flexible Learning Centre. Young people can participate in learning through a range of classroom, hands on and activity based opportunities.

Mobile/Outreach Learning

St Francis Flexible Learning Centre offers an outreach program for young people who are unable to participate in the daily school program. The outreach program supports young people to work towards a full time on site school program. The outreach program currently offers young people a visit with a teacher and youth worker twice a week at their home or local library.
